Arab Foreign Ministers' Statement on Lebanon based on agreement, al-Moallem says

January 06, 2008

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Sunday said the statement which was adopted by Arab foreign Ministers to resolve crisis in Lebanon is a comprehensive plan based on agreement and includes the election of a consensus president.

"The statement called for electing a consensus president, forming a national unity government and formulating a new electoral law," al-Moallem told journalists in Cairo, noting that the mission of Arab League Secretary General ''comes within this framework and not interference in the Lebanese affairs'.

Foreign Minister described as positive the atmospheres of the meeting, held by an initiative of the Arab League Secretary General and comprised foreign Ministers of Syria, Egypt, Saudi, Qatar and Oman.

"Without principle of partnership or agreement, there won't be a solution in Lebanon," al-Moallem stressed, adding "solution is not a Syrian, French, Saudi Arabian or American but it comes by the hands of the Lebanese themselves."

He noted that Syria has adopted a principle based on 'no winner - no loser' in Lebanon, but the winner is Lebanon.

On the US statements regarding Lebanon and the US support to a side at the expense of another side, Minister al-Moallem underlined that the United States obstructs agreement in Lebanon not only thorough their statements, but with their actions on reality.

On the Syrian –Egyptian –Saudi ties and their role in boosting the Arab solidarity, Foreign Minister expressed conviction that there is a true opportunity to get back the Arab joint action core represented by the Syrian-Egyptian-Saudi relations which proved throughout history their importance in coordinating the Arab joint action.

Regarding the return of the Syrian-French relations, al-Moallem affirmed that ties between Syria and France 'are continuous between two states having joint interests,' adding that Lebanon was one item of these ties.

He pointed out that France has interest in conducting a dialogue with Syria as Syria has an interest, adding "there are many issues of mutual concern for the two countries related to peace process, combating the international terrorism and to Iraq.

As for the dangerous conditions in Gaza Strip and the continuation of siege imposed by the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, Foreign Minister underlined "Israeli practices and brutal aggression that led to the death of scores of martyrs are unprecedented acts," adding "these actions have proved that Israel blows up each true chance to achieve the peace."

Al-Moallem referred to the Syrian proposal to add a topic related to the dangerous situation in Gaza Strip, calling for an immediate move to stop these violations and lift the imposed siege on the Strip, in addition to another article calling for all Palestinian sides to restore unity through constructive dialogue.

"The Arab forthcoming summit will be held on scheduled time in Damascus aiming at boosting the Arab solidarity," al-Moallem said, noting the summit is a matter of concern for all Arabs to discuss their issues.
